As you get ready to travel?

Here are some tips to give you peace of mind while you are away and make sure you do not make your house as a target of opportunity. These are some simple precautions from the experts.

Be mindful of who is around when you are discussing your trip - there is no need to let too many people know or draw attention to the fact your house might be empty for a period.

The best deterrent is to have someone housesit. If that is not possible, ask a trusted neighbor or friend to take in the newspaper, mail, and any other deliveries and keep an eye on the house. Give them your trip plans and an emergency phone number so they can reach you in case of an emergency. You can also arrange with the post office and newspaper to suspend delivery for the time you are away.

Lock doors, windows and secure sliding doors (a metal rod or a broomstick in the sliding door track is an inexpensive lock), as well as the garage, the basement, and the attic. Some people even disconnect the power to motorized garage door openers.

Move any valuables from plain sight.

Check on your appliances, unplug anything that doesn't need to be on while you're away. Lower air conditioning/heating units to energy-saving levels.

Set timers to turn on lights if you do not have someone staying at the house.

Regional Cuisine Specialties

With an inexhaustible variety of dishes to pick from in China, here are some culinary specialties you just can't miss during your travels:

Beijing-Peking duck

Hong Kong-Dim sum

Szechuan-A hot-pot meal (Chinese fondue)

Shanghai-Shanghai river crabs

Dining Do's and Don'ts

Here are some (un)common courtesies to consider when dining in China.

In contrast to western rules, slurping is considered an acceptable way to cool down hot soup. Also, since rice is difficult to eat with chopsticks, it's perfectly normal to lift the bowl from the table and scoop it into your mouth.

Before refilling your teacup, extend the courtesy of refilling the cups of fellow guests at the table, even if they are not empty.

Many Americans were told as children to clean their plates when eating. But in China, eating the last piece of food on the table is an insult-signifying that he or she did not serve enough food for the guests.

If placed incorrectly, chopsticks can be omens of bad luck. Standing them in your bowl after dinner replicates a sign of death-incense sticks standing in a bowl of ashes.

Make sure your passport does not expire within six months of your date of travel. Some countries insist that your passport be valid for at least a six-month time period.

Place an envelope in one of your checked bags containing copies of your passport, birth certificate and a back up form of photo I.D. in case your passport is lost or stolen.

Place a copy of the detailed itinerary of your trip inside each piece of luggage. If your luggage is lost, this will help the airline locate you while you're traveling.

If you are on Medicare and traveling outside the United States, be aware that Medicare does not cover any of your medical bills abroad. It's a good idea to get a travel protection policy that will cover these costs.

Plan at least a day or two after your return home before scheduling any commitments; you may be tired after your journey.

Don't Forget

Stow away some antibacterial wipes-they're a convenient way to clean up on the go.

Bring a voltage converter with you, along with an adapter (to fit electrical plugs into foreign outlets). Note that some adapter kits don't include converters.

Pack an extra pair of prescription glasses or contacts in case they are lost or broken.

Comfortable, broken-in walking shoes are a must. Never pack new shoes.

Wrap a long strip of duct tape around a pencil and bring it along for the ride. Duct tape is the magic fix for everything from torn suitcases to a broken sandal strap.

The Potala Palace is located in Lhasa, Tibet. The Palace was converted into a museum by the Chinese. The building measures 400 meters east to west and 350 meters north to south, so it is quite the site to see. The building was reinforced with copper into the foundation to help support it from earthquakes. It consists of thirteen stories of buildings which house over 1,000 rooms, 10,000 shrines and about 200,000 statues. The buildings sit atop of Red Mountain, so the views are amazing. Tradition has it that the three main hills of Lhasa represent the "Three Protectors of Tibet".

The Potala Palace consists of many different parts. One of them is the White Palace which was the living quarters of the Dalai Lama. The first White Palace was built during the lifetime of the Fifth Dalai Lama. It was extended to its size today by the thirteenth Dalai Lama in the early twentieth century.

Then you have the Red Palace which is completely devoted to religious study and Buddhist prayer. It consists of many different halls, chapels and libraries on many different levels with smaller galleries and winding passages. These include the main central hall of the Red Palace, the Great West Hall, which consists of four great chapels that proclaim the glory and power of the builder of the Potala, and also The Saint's Chapel, The North Chapel, South Chapel, East Chapel, and the West Chapel.

The galleries are the First Gallery which is on the floor above the West chapel. This gallery has a number of large windows that give light and ventilation to the Great West Hall and its chapels below. Between the windows, murals show the Potala's construction in very fine detail. The Second Gallery gives access to the central pavilion which is reserved for visitors to get refreshments and buy souvenirs. The Third Gallery, along with fine murals, has a number of dark rooms branching off containing enormous collections of bronze statues and miniature figures made of copper and gold that are worth a fortune. The chanting hall of the Seventh Dalai Lama is on the south side and on the east an entrance connects the section to the Saints chapel and the Deyangshar between the two palaces. Then there is the tomb of the 13th Dalai Lama which is located west of the Great West Hall and it can only be reached from an upper floor with the company of a monk or a guide. Built in 1933, the giant stupa contains priceless jewels and 1 ton of solid gold. Devotional offerings include elephant tusks from India, vases, porcelain lions and a pagoda made from over 200,000 pearls. Beautiful murals in traditional Tibetan styles depict many events of the life of the Thirteenth Dalai Lama during the early 20th century.

The visiting hours are 9am-3pm daily. Admission is limited to 2,500 visitors per day. Reservations should be made in advance. Entry time is assigned when the ticket is purchased.

Other sites to see in Lhasa are Tibetan Highlands, Barkhor Street, Sera Monastery, Summer Palace of Norbu Lingka, Jokhang Temple and Tibetan History Museum.

Constructed in 221 B.C. by the order of the first Chinese emperor, Qin Shihuang, the Great Wall was originally designed to be a military base where Chinese infantries would fight against cavalries from the north. In order to complete the daunting task of constructing the Great Wall, Emperor Shihuang drafted more than 400,000 men – nearly half of the total male population in China – to work on this project. The construction lasted for more than 10 years and more than one-third of the workers died from harsh working conditions and deadly plagues. While the wall protected the emperor from northern invasions, it did nothing to help defend him against the backlash and disdain that society had for him." Information provided by Globus Journeys.

Angkor means 'Capital City' or 'Holy City'. 'Khmer' refers to the dominant ethnic group in modern and ancient Cambodia. Angkor refers to the capital city of the Khmer Empire that existed in the area of Cambodia between the 9th and 12th centuries CE, as well as to the empire itself. The temple ruins in the area of Siem Reap are the remnants of the Angkorian capitals. They represent the pinnacle of the ancient Khmer art, architecture, and civilization. At its greatest height, The Age of Angkor was a time when the capital area contained more than a million people. During this time Khmer kings constructed vast waterworks and grand temples, and Angkor's military, economic and cultural dominance had control over the area of modern Cambodia, and much of Thailand, Vietnam and Laos.

Stretched along the Siem Reap River, the small provincial capital of Siem Reap Town serves as the gateway to the temple ruins of the Khmer Empire. The Angkor Archaeological Park consists of dozens of temple ruins including Bayon, Banteay Srey and the legendary Angkor Wat. Their archaeological significance and artistically visual impact put it in a class with the Pyramids, Machu Picchu and the Taj Mahal. Also, it has been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Unlike many other world class monuments, the ruins of Angkor are unspoiled by over development, and unfortunately this will not be true in a couple of years. Though the major temples are relatively visited by tourists these days, it is still a possibility to avoid the crowds in order to explore the area and discover Angkor.

Siem Reap Town is where it is recommended to stay during your visit to Angkor. The area has continued to receive foreign visitors to the temples for over 100 years now. The town is made up of old villages, which were originally developed around individual pagodas and later overlaid with a French colonial-era center. When walking through the village it's rather evident how there is colonial and Chinese style architecture in the town center and around the Old Market. Today, Siem Reap offers a wide range of several upscale hotels and budget guesthouses, restaurants, shops and pubs. You can also experience traditional Cambodia by watching the 'Apsara' dance performances, stopping by craft shops and silk farms, taking road tours through the rice-paddy countryside, and boat trips on the great Tonle Sap Lake to fishing villages and bird sanctuary, plus much more!

The weather is best in December and January, but even during these months it can be hot and humid. May through October is rainy season. It is suggested to travel in a group so that you are assured good accomodations. A popular itinerary is to combine a visit to Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Siem Reap and Angkor in a one week trip

Its waterfront area provides a port to the rest of the world as well as beautiful beaches. The waterfront district has unique arts galleries and boutiques and one of the largest Chinatown areas in Japan. Yokohama is the home of Japan's Central Baseball League and Japan's first coffee shop. There is even an indoor beach with sand and water and waves! The second largest city in Japan, Yokohama is home to 3 million people and is a growing, innovative business center. Its large, accessible port has made it Japan's largest international trading center. It certainly maintains its own identity and does not fall into the shadow of Tokyo, a mere 18.6 miles (30 kilometers) from Tokyo

Please share some of your unique ideas!

Bring an extra bag for souvenirs. It’s always handy to pack an empty collapsible suitcase or duffel bag with you. It doesn't take up much room and when returning home you can fill it with souvenirs and even dirty laundry.

One color scheme: When packing to travel, it's helpful to use one color scheme, like black or brown, and maybe just one accent color. It’s much easier to coordinate your wardrobe this way.

Preventing Wrinkles: Place individual items of clothing in dry cleaners’ plastic bags. Your clothes won’t wrinkle! It sounds too easy but it really works. If you’re using a hanging garment bag, prevent creasing of suits and garments on hangers by placing a small rolled-up towel on the inside, where the garments fold. This will prevent the horizontal crease caused by the fold.

Save Space: To keep shoes and boots in shape, fill them with socks. Ladies, consider putting your shoes inside your husband's shoes. They'll be protected and won't take up more space.

A dryer fabric softener sheet in your suitcase will keep your clothes smelling fresh while you travel. Slide a dry fabric softener sheet over your hair to calm down static-electric flyaway hair.

Beauty products that are good for 2 or more uses are great. Elizabeth Arden's 8-hour cream works as a facial moisturizer, lip balm, hair tamer, and sunburn soother all in one. Shampoo can double up as travel wash, and those chubby make up pencils from Clinique can multi-task for lipstick, eye color, and blush. Oil of Olay Daily Facials cleansing cloths are dry, and they remove makeup, cleanse, and moisturize without taking products.

Make-up tricks: Use a stick foundation instead of a liquid. The texture is light, and many of the new sticks are oil-free. The foundation can also double as a concealer and an eyeshadow base. Look for perfume in a solid form as well. The containers are small enough to fit in a purse, yet smell strong. Kiss my Face makes shave lather in a tube – no aerosol cans. Invest in a good lipstick palette with a variety of colors. The palettes are small, and give you a good variety of colors for all skin tones, and cut down on the number of bulky tubes.

Earrings: To bring a selection of earrings on your trip, get an inexpensive felt square at a fabric store (they sell them pre-cut) and simply fasten earrings through the felt and fold. Fasten the roll with a rubber band.

Necklaces: When packing your necklaces, place each one in a straw, by threading one end of the necklace through, and clasping it closed. This prevents the necklace from tangling up. (Use longer straws for longer necklaces, and cut the straw to exactly half the length of the necklace, for shorter ones.)

Adventures by Disney Invites Families to Experience the World in 2010

BURBANK, Calif., Aug. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Whether floating down the Colorado River or climbing the Great Wall of China, families participating in Adventures by Disney vacations will connect with the world - and with each other - during a variety of guided group travel experiences spanning six continents in 2010. Created specifically for families, Adventures by Disney itineraries lead guests through the history and culture of each destination while providing unique experiences and exclusive access along the way.

Entering its fifth year, Adventures by Disney designs tours with the family in mind and provides educationally-enriched experiences so even younger travelers understand, appreciate and have fun in their new surroundings. These hassle-free vacations, rooted in the service and quality of family travel leader Disney, provide distinctive opportunities and special touches to make memories that last a lifetime.

"We are able to offer vacation experiences to some of the most fascinating places on earth, literally bringing history to life for our guests," said Don Gross, Vice President, Adventures by Disney. "Each itinerary is carefully planned, creating a vacation that includes the most iconic and must-see sites as well as off-the-beaten path excursions. In fact, guests often tell us the hardest part about the trip is choosing the adventure."

The Disney Difference

From snorkeling with sea turtles in the Galapagos to discovering Europe's classic history, each itinerary is as matchless as its surroundings. Yet one aspect holds true for every trip: the special touches that are collectively called "the Disney difference" . . .

Adventure Guide: Part storyteller, ambassador, concierge and role model, Adventures by Disney's highly-trained Adventure Guides are the friendly hosts and travel specialists who lead guests on every trip. With two guides assigned for every group (of up to 40 people), travelers receive individual attention to ensure a fun and enriching vacation.

Junior Adventurers: Young travelers are transformed into Junior Adventurers - seeing, hearing and tasting things that they might otherwise not have experienced. The immersive activities created just for kids allow young travelers to learn and have fun in places like museums that aren't always as entertaining for the younger set. For example, at the Louvre in Paris, the Junior Adventurers play an Art Detective game throughout the museum with their Adventure Guides, while adults take a privately guided tour with an art historian. In addition, the Adventure Guides are expert storytellers and are trained to create fun and unique, locally-based experiences for the kids. On almost every departure, there is also a Junior Adventurers night, in which the kids have a special evening experience with their Guides, while the adults get a quiet evening on their own at the resort.

Local Experts: An authentic Tuscan chef, a naturalist from Costa Rica, a Chinese tai chi master - these local experts share a passion; they live and breathe the local history and culture of their destination. They are an integral part of every Adventures by Disney vacation. They join guests to share their stories and provide an "insider's" perspective to each destination.

VIP Access: Travelers vacationing with Adventures by Disney receive VIP experiences that are practically impossible to schedule on their own. Special entry to otherwise crowded sites, unique accommodations (like castles in Ireland and Germany, a dude Ranch in Yellowstone and at the base of a live, active volcano in Costa Rica. Guests also get backstage access of celebrated performances like "The Lion King" in London. These are just a few of the exceptional moments woven through each itinerary, promising expedited service and a broader knowledge of each destination.

Adventures by Disney's 2010 destinations include 19 global itineraries:

In Japan, makeup plays an important role in the tradition of Geishas. One of the most involved aspects of a Geisha is the application of the required makeup. The customary white powder base, red lipstick and black eyeliner must be applied precisely and meticulously. Once applied, the makeup creates the illusion that the Geisha is wearing a mask.

There are different levels of a Geisha, indicated by the manner in which the lipstick is applied. According to some historians, it is tradition that a Geisha will not color in her top lip during her first year. An established Geisha will wear the top lip completely colored in, and the bottom lip will be a stripe that goes through its center.

Singapore Attractions

The Peranakans of Katong--If you'd like to experience local culture that's a bit off the beaten track, come to Katong. This neighborhood came to prominence before World War II, when Peranakans and Eurasians, families of mixed heritage, populated this area outside of the city center along the east coast of the island. Many Peranakans, because of their mixed Chinese and Malay heritage, rose to financial power and were known to build lavish homes (many of which still line the streets of Katong), furnishing them with ornate Chinese inspired interiors, and dress with opulent flair.

A trip to the Asian Civilisations Museum, Armenian Street will give you an excellent history and overview of this unique group, with displays of significant cultural items. Peranakan antique furniture sports detailed wood carvings in classic Chinese design but with unbelievably gaudy mother of pearl inlay everywhere. Their pottery also follows Chinese aesthetics with pretty floral, phoenix, and dragon patterns but in vivid colors more representative of Malay tastes -- bright yellows, pinks and greens.

Singapore Botanic Gardens - In 1822, Singapore's first botanic garden was started at Fort Canning by Sir Stamford Raffles. After it lost funding, the present Botanic Garden came into being in 1859 thanks to the efforts of a horticulture society; it was later turned over to the government for upkeep. More than just a garden, this space occupied an important place in the region's economic development when "Mad" Henry Ridley, one of the garden's directors, imported Brazilian rubber tree seedlings from Great Britain. He devised improved latex-trapping methods and led the campaign to convince reluctant coffee growers to switch plantation crops. The garden also pioneered orchid hybridization, breeding a number of internationally acclaimed varieties.

Singapore Discovery Center - This cool display of the latest military technology has hands-on exhibits that cannot be resisted -- one of 19 interactive information kiosks, for instance, lets you design tanks and ships. Airborne Rangers, a virtual-reality experience, lets you parachute from a plane and manipulate your landing to safety. In the motion simulator, feel your seat move in tandem with the fighter pilot on the screen. The Shooting Gallery is a computer-simulated combat firing range using real but decommissioned M16 rifles. IMAX features roll at the five-story iWERKS Theatre regularly. When you get hungry, there's a fast-food court.

Singapore Activities

Sungei Buloh Nature Reserve: Every year during the winter months, flocks of migrating birds from as far north as Siberia vacation in the warm waters of this unique mangrove swamp park. Easily traversed by wooden walkway, the park will never disappoint for some stunning wildlife shots.

Beaches--Besides the beach at East Coast Park and those on Sentosa Island you can try the smaller beach at Changi Village, called Changi Point. From the shore, you have a panoramic view of Malaysia, Indonesia, and several smaller islands that belong to Singapore. The beach is calm and frequented mostly by locals who set up camps and barbecues to hang out all day. There are kayak rentals along the beach, and in Changi Village you'll find, in addition to a huge hawker center, quite a few international restaurants and pubs to hang out in and have a fresh seafood lunch when you get hungry.

We just received this question from a client, and thought it was worth posting, as many travelers have similar concerns.

Q. I'm confused about luggage, specifically carry on. Is my purse considered a carry on item? How about my husband's camera case? My husband wants to bring his computer, it is slightly over the 12x11x6 Is this a problem?

A. #1. A purse or camera case is not considered a carry on. You can still have a separate carry-on bag.

#2. As far as your husband's computer, carry-on bags must be small enough to store in overhead bins or under the seat in front of you on motorcoaches and other transportation. If it is a very minimal difference, (1 inch,) then it should still fit in the overhead without a problem, but these measurements are given to ensure you will not have any issue while touring.

Secure Your Home: Cancel all newspapers, pay bills and consider what to do about the mail. You can ask your Post Office to hold it while you’re away, or get someone to look after your house. Put some lights and a radio or TV on a timer. If applicable, park a car in your driveway.

Be prepared: Bring an emergency contact list, including the telephone numbers of your insurance people, credit card issuers, and home numbers of close relatives or friends, in case of an emergency.

Back up important information: Copy or scan your travel documents – passport, travelers, identity and vaccination card and credit cards – front and back. Make two sets of copies, leave one at home or with a trusted person, and store the second in a secret place in your suitcase. If your wallet is lost or stolen, you will have all the information and phone numbers you need. If you choose to scan your documents, send them to your email address. In case of a problem, you can access them from any business center or cybercafe in the world.

If you have a black or blue suitcase, you may want to wrap brightly colored electrical tape or ribbons around the handles of check luggage to make it easy to identify, OR use colored luggage tags.

Just in case your luggage is lost, make sure you have your name, address and phone number on each piece, so that the airline can contact you. We suggest using a work address rathern than home whenever possible.

Medications: Remember, all medications and vitamins must be in their original containers when traveling. You can ask your pharmacist to label small bottles with just enough medication in for your trip. Always carry these in your carry-on. Also, take a few days extra supply, in case you are delayed coming back.

Useful Items When Traveling

Sun glasses

Pen & small notepad

Small retractable umbrella

Sun block

Many clients wonder what the differences are when traveling with a budget, first class or deluxe tour operator. As we have discussed in previous posts, a lot has to do with the type of accommodations used, the location of the hotels, the number of people on the tour and how much is included in the price (i.e. sightseeing, meals, etc.)

Today our focus is to explain the difference in meals. In most cases, on a budget tour you will receive continental breakfast. This is a basic breakfast of usually consisting of cereals, pastries, juice and coffee. Once you take a first class tour and above, breakfast is normally buffet. This offers the widest choices, quickest service and as much or as little food as you desire.

Budget tours rarely include dinners, and when they do, it is normally in the hotel. First class tour operators offer a combination of both hotel dinners and some dining at local restaurants. However, there is usually a limited menu. It includes 3 to 5 courses with a more limited choice of appetizer, entrees and desserts. We are not suggesting the food is bad, on the contrary, frequently the limited menu includes the chef's freshest market specials of the day and takes less time to serve.

Dining is a delightful and integral part of the travel experience when traveling abroad. Deluxe and luxury operators select restaurants that offer a true taste of each region you visit, and offer full choice of menu to include a starter course (hot & cold appetizer, soup or salad,) main course, dessert and beverage. You’ll savor a delectable assortment of classic dishes and regional specialties. Many meals include wine with dinner and at times entertainment.

Regardless of which tour you book, gratuities to the wait staff are included. For lunches and evenings that meals are not included, the knowledgeable tour directors can assist you in finding dining options based on your the type of food you want to have and your budget.

For those that are new to travel, you may be wondering when reading through an itinerary what is a UNESCO World Heritage Site?

A UNESCO World Heritage Site is a site that holds a list of outstanding cultural or natural universal value such as, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. It could be a monument, building, mountain, forest, lake, desert, complex or city.

So how is a site selected?

Only countries that have signed the World Heritage Convention, pledging to protect their natural & cultural heritage can submit nominations for properties on their territory to be considered for inclusion in UNESCO’s World Heritage list.

A nominated property is independently evaluated by several Advisory Boards. Once a site has been nominated & evaluated, the intergovernmental World Heritage Committee makes the final decision. One per year, the Committee meets to decide which sites will be inscribed on the World Heritage list.

The program aims to catalogue & preserve sites of outstanding importance, either cultural or natural, to the common heritage of humankind.

There are currently 878 World Heritage Sites in 145 countries. These include 679 cultural, 174 natural and 25 mixed properties.

You may have visited a place in the U.S. already, not realizing it was a UNESCO site such as the Statue of Liberty, Grand Canyon, Yosemite Yellowstone or Olympic National Park.

Click here for a full list of site.

I have seen 20 sites in 9 countries, so only 858 to go, but I have to say that certain countries do not interest me AT ALL, so my goal would be to see at least half of the UNESCO sites while traveling the world.

As you know, the swine flu situation has led a few countries to discourage travel to Mexico and the United States. The U.S. Travel Association will take a lead role in addressing this challenge. While it is important not to minimize the seriousness of the threat, it is critical to be prepared, but not panicked.

Click here for Swine Flu talking points

Click here for U.S. Travel's statement.

Click here for the CDC website with more information on Swine Flu.

For all travelers, CDC recommends the following steps to help you stay healthy:

Be sure you are up-to-date with all your routine vaccinations, including a seasonal influenza vaccine. The seasonal vaccine is not expected to offer protection against swine flu viruses, but it can protect against seasonal influenza viruses which may still be circulating in Mexico and the Southern Hemisphere.

Pack a travel health kit that contains basic first aid and medical supplies. See Pack Smart in Your Survival Guide to Safe and Healthy Travel for a list of what to include in your travel health kit.

Identify the health-care resources in the area(s) you will be visiting.

Check if your health insurance plan will cover you abroad. Consider purchasing additional insurance that covers medical evacuation in case you become sick. For more information, see Medical Information for Americans Traveling Abroad from the U.S. Department of State.

Remember that U.S. embassies, consulates and military facilities do not have the legal authority, capability, and resources to evacuate or to give medications, vaccines or medical care to private U.S. citizens overseas.

Practice healthy habits to help stop the spread of swine flu

Wash your hands often with soap and water. This removes germs from your skin and helps prevent diseases from spreading.

Use waterless alcohol-based hand gels (containing at least 60% alcohol) when soap is not available and hands are not visibly dirty.

Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and put your used tissue in a wastebasket.

If you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve, not your hands.

Wash your hands after coughing or sneezing, using soap and water or an alcohol-based hand cleaner (with at least 60% alcohol) when soap and water are not available.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs spread that way.

Try to avoid close contact with sick people. (Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people.)

It is important to follow the advice of local health and government authorities. You may be asked to restrict your movement and stay in your home to contain the spread of swine flu.

If you have specific questions about the swine influenza cases see http://www.cdc.gov/contact/ or call 1-800-232-4636, which is 1-800-CDC-INFO.

Xi'an, the eternal city, records the great changes of the Chinese nation just like a living history book. Called Chang'an in ancient times, Xian is one of the birthplaces of the ancient civilization in the Yellow River Basin area of the country. Several relics and historical sites are here.

The Museum of Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses is praised as "the eighth major miracle of the world", Mausoleum of Emperor Qin Shi Huang is listed on the World Heritage List. The statues remain where they were uncovered, protected by a large hangar-like hall. Individual soldiers can be studied more closely in a museum exhibit in an adjacent building.

The City Wall of the Ming Dynasty is the largest and most intact Ming Dynasty castle in the world. In the city, there is the 3000 year old Banpo Village Remains from the Neolithic Age, and the Forest of Stone Steles that holds 3,000 stone steles of different periods from the Han Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty.

Around Xi'an, the Famen Temple enjoys the reputation of being the "forefather of pagodas and temples in Central Shaanxi," because it holds the finger bones of Sakyamuni--the founder of Buddhism. The natural landscape around Xian is also marvelous. Mt. Huashan, as one of the five best-known mountains in China, is famous for its breath-taking cliffs and its unique characteristics.

Travel fact: China has 35 listed world heritage sites made up of both cultural and natural sites.

Oct 12 – Arrive Hanoi, Vietnam

Upon arrival, we’ll be warmly greeted and escorted to the 5-star InterContinental Hanoi Westlake, set on extensive landscaped grounds in the heart of the city. After settling-in to our rooms with time to refresh, we’ll step out to explore the boulevards and byways of this charming city.

Hanoi has a completely unique feel and rhythm, described by many visitors as “timeless” or “old-fashioned.” Indeed, you’ll be mesmerized by scenes of everyday life everywhere you turn – bustling sidewalk cafes, pavement barbers, and bicycle-filled streets lined with elegant colonial French mansions. We dive right in this afternoon when we step aboard Cyclos – the traditional way to get around town. Your personal Cyclo driver will take you along shaded avenues and narrow lanes, passing grand ochre-hued Colonial buildings and tranquil lakes. We’ll ride past Hoan Kiem Lake and through the ’36 Streets’ of the Old Town.

In the evening we experience a 900-year-old art form, the traditional Vietnamese Water Puppet Show. Then we’re off to Wild Lotus Restaurant, a favorite of our Hanoi-based colleagues. Meals D

[Please note that today’s airport transfers are complimentary for air-inclusive passengers arriving with our group]

Oct 13 – Exploring Hanoi

Today’s carefully planned sightseeing explores across the centuries, from the country’s ancient past to the 21st century vitality of modern-day Hanoi. We begin at the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, a monumental edifice of marble, granite and exotic tropical woods. Just behind it is the simple house where he lived and worked, still filled with his personal belongings. Admire the graceful One Pillar Pagoda before continuing on to the Temple of Literature, founded in 1076.

We’ll stop for lunch at Wild Rice Restaurant and then visit the Hoa Lo Museum, infamously known as the Hanoi Hilton. Then our guide will lead us along the atmospheric streets of the Old Quarter, where local artists will invite us into their homes to see their works, many of them shaping the country’s dynamic avant garde art scene. We’ve made special arrangements with one of our favorite artists for a private gallery reception including wine, hors d’oeuvres, and chance to meet the artist. We return to our hotel for an evening at leisure. Meals B,L

Oct 14 – Out and About in the Countryside

Our leisurely journey into the scenic northern countryside takes us first to Thay Pagoda. Just 25 miles from the Hanoi, this Pagoda is especially popular with city residents during festival times, and its famed for its finely carved statues of Buddha, ornamented with lacquer and gold.

We continue through the peaceful landscapes to Duong Lum, a quiet village surrounded by ride paddies. This community is recognized for its remarkable preservation of old homes and temples. As we explore along the curving alleyways, we’ll pause to visit one of these ancient houses and then continue on into the surrounding paddy fields. We’ll enjoy lunch in this timeless setting before returning to Hanoi where the balance of the day is free to explore or relax as you wish. Meals B,L

Oct 15 – Hanoi / Ha Long Bay – Overnight Cruise aboard the Bhaya

Early risers can join our guide this morning for a brisk walk around Hoan Kiem Lake. The more energetic and adventurous might join local residents here in their early morning Tai Chi exercise. Following breakfast at the hotel, we’ll all travel together to Ha Long Bay. Our scenic drive is just a few hours, but the breathtaking scenery that greets us will feel worlds away from the city.

Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ha Long Bay is a captivating region of three thousand limestone islands, forested peaks, hidden coves, secret caves, and emerald green waters that stretch forth as far as you can see. Traditional sailing junks and local fishing boats ply these waters and here we board our enchanting Bhaya cruise vessel, styled after the grand junks once reserved exclusively for the Emperor. We’ll board around Noon and have plenty of time to settle-in to our spacious outside cabins before enjoying a welcome drink as we set sail. After a buffet lunch, the afternoon is ours to enjoy. We’ll cruise through the magnificent scenery exploring along tranquil coves and past limestone caves to visit a selection of islands. As weather and sea conditions permit, we might swim, snorkel or kayak during the afternoon. Of course, there’s plenty of time to just relax onboard, enjoying the vistas, and socializing with our fellow passengers. Dinner is served onboard. Meals B,L,D

Oct 16 – Ha Long Bay / Hue

Early risers might practice their newly-learned Tai Chi skills as the sun rises across the magnificent panorama of the bay and its myriad islands. After a leisurely buffet breakfast, and time to enjoy the scenery, we step off ship mid-morning and return to Hanoi by private motorcoach for our flight to Central Vietnam. Upon arrival in Hue, we’ll be greeted and escorted by air-conditioned coach to La Residence Hotel & Spa, an enchanting boutique resort set on the banks of the Perfume River. Meals B,D

Oct 17 – Getting to Know Hue

Founded more than 300 years ago, Hue has been an important cultural, religious, and educational center for Vietnam. Heavily damaged during the Vietnam War, the preservation and restoration work over the past few decades has been impressive, and in 1993 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our exploration of the history and monuments of Hue will take us along the Perfume River, across its tranquil waters, and on a pleasant stroll along peaceful shaded pathways. Our morning visits include the tomb of Emperor Gia Long, founder of the Nguyen Dynasty, and also Tu Hieu Pagoda – surrounded by the lush tropical vegetation of the countryside.

After lunch, we tour the Imperial Citadel, an impressive complex of buildings, lakes, and tranquil gardens – all laid out in a series of concentric circles. We also visit the Forbidden Purple City, built in the 1800’s for the personal use of the Emperor and staffed exclusively by eunuchs who posed no threat to the Royal Concubines.

Our touring ends on a high note, with a specially arranged visit to the former home of Princess Ngoc Son. It’s been finely preserved, retaining much of its original century-old form, and is perhaps the finest traditional garden house in the region. We’ll meet the present owner Mr. Phan Thuan An, himself a direct descendent of the Imperial Court. A former history professor, Mr. An has written several books, including a respected review of Hue’s history and culture. After visiting Mr. An, we’ll journey by boat down the Perfume River, passing peaceful sampan villages on the way back to our hotel. Meals B,L

Oct 18 – Hue / Danang / Hoi An

This morning’s journey takes us across the scenic Hai Van Pass through Danang and past the Marble Mountains to the historic port city of Hoi An. We’ll check-in to our deluxe beachfront resort, The Victoria Hoi An, with time to freshen-up before lunch at the Morning Glory Restaurant - a terrific place discovered by Scott, your Tour Escort, on a previous trip to Vietnam.

Known as Faifo to early western traders, Hoi An was one of Asia’s major international ports during the 17th to 19th centuries, home to Japanese, Indian, Chinese and Portuguese merchants. Today, Hoi An is remarkable for its collection of original Chinese temples and glorious homes built by these wealthy merchants of earlier times. As we explore with our guide through the traffic-free cobblestone streets of this ancient seaport, it’s easy to imagine yourself a sailor of the 18th century, when Hoi An was one of the busiest ports in all of Asia. We’ll wander through the old town center to admire these old merchants’ homes, the art galleries that now draw visitors from all over the world, and the famous Japanese Covered Bridge. Our dinner reservations this evening are at the charming Brothers Café, located on the riverfront. Meals B,L,D

Oct 19 – Explore in and around Hoi An

This morning, you have the opportunity to customize our stay here to your own personal interests. For those with a taste for food and cuisine, we’ve arranged for a cooking class at the Red Bridge Cooking School & Restaurant. This included excursion begins with a pleasant boat ride along the Thu Bon River into the countryside outside of Hoi An. After a refreshing welcome drink at the pier, our chef will introduce us to the ingredients and methods of Vietnamese cuisine in general, and the regional Hoi An style in particular. A number of specialties will be prepared as we watch and learn. Then, we’ll retreat to the riverfront to dine al fresco, sampling the dishes our chef has prepared. Before returning to our resort, we’ll visit the peaceful village of Cam Thanh to experience the ordinary rhythms of daily life here… children returning from school, water buffalos being fed, and farmers returning to the fields after the midday heat has passed. We return to the Victoria Resort in mid-afternoon.

Instead of this planned excursion, you can spend the day relaxing on the white sand beach or taking advantage of our resort’s fine amenities, including the Victoria Spa, complimentary mountain bike rental, tennis court, swimming pool and fitness center. We can also make arrangements for those who wish to play a round of golf at the first Colin Montgomerie designed golf course in Vietnam. Meals B (lunch is included for guests participating in our Cooking Class excursion)

Oct 20 – Hoi An / My Son / Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)

After an early breakfast, we depart Hoi An for a scenic one-hour journey to My Son. This astounding archaeological site was the religious capital of the Champa Kingdom, which flourished here from the 4th to 13th centuries. This unique Hindu-based culture left behind more than 70 religious monuments. But with the ravages of time and war, only 25 partial structures remain today. They are, nevertheless, spectacular and with UNESCO recognition as a World Heritage Site, extensive conservation efforts are underway to protect these fascinating jungle ruins.

Our afternoon flight from Danang Airport brings us to bustling Ho Chi Minh City, where we’ll be warmly greeted and escorted to the beautiful Majestic Hotel, a Colonial-era landmark in the heart of the city. Dinner this evening will be at one of our favorite restaurants in the city. Meals B,D

Oct 21 – Discovering Saigon and the Cu Chi Tunnels

This morning’s excursion brings us to the Cu Chi Tunnels, the incredible underground network that once stretched for 210 miles. This tunnel complex was built by guerilla fighters beginning in 1940 and construction continued throughout the Vietnam War. Marvel at secret trapdoors, underground kitchens, living quarters, and even conference rooms. We’ll have ample opportunity to view the excavated areas from above. The more adventurous among us can explore the deeper second and even third-level tunnels.

We return to Saigon for lunch and a fascinating afternoon of sightseeing, including Reunification Hall - formerly known as the Presidential Palace. It was towards this modern building that Communist tanks rolled on the morning of April 30, 1975, as Saigon fell. We’ll stop by the General Post Office, a picturesque Colonial-era landmark, City Hall, and Notre Dame Cathedral. Then we’ll enjoy a guided stroll along Le Cong Kieu Street, famous for the many shops and galleries selling “antiques” – both old and new! Our specially arranged dinner this evening explores the French heritage of the country. At Au Manoir de Khai, we step into a stunningly restored French Colonial home for an elegant dinner of fine French cuisine. Meals B,L,D

Oct 22 – Ho Chi Minh City / Siem Reap, Cambodia

We’ll be taken by air-conditioned motor coach to the airport for our flight to Siem Reap. Upon arrival, we’ll be warmly greeted and escorted to the deluxe Victoria Angkor Resort. Meals B

Oct 23 – Siem Reap: Explore Angkor

Today begins our guided exploration of the magnificent jungle ruins of Angkor, once the royal seat of the mighty and wealthy Khmer Empire. This morning, we explore imposing Angkor Wat, the largest temple in the world with a volume of stone equaling that of the Cheops Pyramid in Egypt. Inspired by 12th century Hinduism, it took an estimated 30 years to build Angkor Wat, including the intricately carved bas-relief which adorns all four sides of the temple.

Enjoy lunch at Viroth’s Restaurant and then discover the monumental magnificence of Angkor Thom – the last capital of the Khmers, with its Elephant Terrace, the Terrace of the Leper King, and the stunning Bayon temple. This 12th century masterpiece lies at the very centre of Angkor Thom and is an archaeological wonder of symmetry and grandeur. Late in the day, our guide will lead you to a prime vantage point to witness the sun set over Angkor, a magnificent and unforgettable spectacle. We dine tonight at the Sugar Palm Restaurant. Meals B,L,D

Oct 24 – Siem Reap: Exploring farther afield in Angkor

This morning we visit the amazing Ta Prohm, a 12th century temple that has been left largely un-restored and in its natural state, surrounded by jungle with massive Banyan roots and limbs enveloping the stone like tentacles. We continue our exploration at Chau Say Tevoda, a Hindu Temple from the 12th century, and Preah Khan, an extensive complex built by a Khmer King as a monastery and teaching institution. An afternoon visit to Les Artisans d’Angkor reveals the important work being done to preserve the traditional skills of Cambodia’s artisans. This evening, we’ll delight in fine Asian cuisine accompanied by wine, conversation and the camaraderie of our traveling companions. Meals B,D

Oct 25 - Siem Reap Departure

We’ll be escorted to the airport for our departure flight. Meals B

Should you bring a laptop while traveling?

This is a personal question that really depends on many things. What you’ll be doing, where you are going and how long will you be traveling?

I would like to share some guidelines that may help with your decision.

Reasons you should bring a laptop:

You can email your family and friends. Having your laptop, you can email your loved ones back home. This is something you could do at most internet cafes, which is a much nicer atmosphere than your hotel room. Most cafes around the world do offer free Wifi when you order something. Not all cafes have free Wifi; some do have a small charge. Newer cruise ships also offer Wifi, but make sure and purchase a package, as usage rates can be high.

You can download all your photos. You can download your digital photo right to your laptop. This will keep your camera’s memory stick free everyday. This will allow you to capture that favorite photo. If your memory stick is full, you would lose that favorite photo moment.

Keeping a journal of the cities you visited. Sometimes we see so much on our vacation that we tend to forget something. Keeping a journal along the way will allow you to never forget. It also allows you to post your travel blogs in writing.

Calling home for free (or very cheap) with Skype. For mere cents per minute you can make calls to landlines and cell phones from all over the world with Skype. It allows you to call from any web-enabled laptop. It’s a great way to keep in touch over the phone.

You can get lots of local information. Many laptops today have maps, directions, schedules and must-see sites for key cities. Maybe you would like get tickets to a play or need to get those directions to a restaurant. You can get all the information you need right from your laptop. Usually it’s much better than carrying around big guidebooks.

You can work. Even though we are on vacation, sometimes we still have our work on our minds. Maybe you have an on-line business and need to be kept informed. Having your laptop with you allows you to still work.

Reasons you should keep your laptop home:

It could get lost, stolen or damaged. Where you are traveling really depends on the risks, which could range from mild to extreme. Getting your laptop insured by home or travel insurance is really not likely. Most insurance companies won’t cover you unless you pay a very high premium.

It’s extra weight to carry. If weight is an issue then you may want to keep it home. Depending on where you are traveling, you would need to bring your power adapter and any plug in devices to operate your laptop.

Surfing the internet. As we all know, the internet can be addicting. You could spend hours surfing the web, when we should be enjoying the experience of the city that you paid to see.

Checking in at the airport. Our new airport regulations require us to open our carry bags to get through security. When you are traveling with your laptop, you will have to remove your laptop from the carry case for security inspection, so allow extra time for check-in.

You need to base your decision on where you are going. The more remote destinations you are traveling to, the less likely you will find a Wifi connection. Some remote islands will probably only have a dial up connection, which would probably be very slow.

The biggest consideration is whether you feel you actually need a laptop. Some people absolutely need to stay connected. If you decide to bring it, I would recommend a soft case to protect it. I would use a water-resistant case. Remember to never stow your computer in your luggage.

I just read an article on CNN written by Christopher Elliott regarding a family that has asked for help in waiving an airline/consolidator penalty of $535 each ($2,675 total for 5).

The story had a nice ending, as Mr. Elliott was able to get the client a full refund, but not all stories end this way, and clients lose thousands of dollars for not asking the right questions prior to making a reservation.

Be aware of penalties! At Atlas, when we book reservations for our clients, not only do we provide them with a confirmation, but also the Terms and Conditions for each supplier, as cancellation penalties vary for each company. At times, there are 3 to 5 pages of "conditions" for the client to read over, but all of this is done prior to booking the reservation, so you have no surprises down the road.

Furthermore as the article mentions, if there is any chance you may have to cancel your trip, a consolidator is not the way to go when booking airline tickets, as their penalties are usually higher than booking with the airline or suppliers directly.

Final thoughts...no one can anticipate or predict the future. Be prepared and have piece of mind, by purchasing travel insurance for every trip! Suppliers such as Travel Guard & Access America offer add-ons to several of their plans that allow you to cancel for work reasons or even cancel for any reason, and receive up to 75% of your penalties back. Many cruise lines and tour operators offer their own version of cancel for any reason policies, but in some cases rather than money, you receive vouchers for future travel.

It can all be a bit confusing, so make sure to consult a travel professional to help you select the best coverage to protect your investment.

The Eclipse phenomenon is a natural wonder, unparalleled in its spectacle! With the Sun's powerful light momentarily extinguished, the blue sky of the Earth's atmosphere is diminished so that the Sun's pearly white corona comes into view. Called the "darkness that enlightens", it is this rare occurrence that makes it possible to study the sun as at no other time.
(ask for code SITA)

Cruise Highlights:

A series of lectures about the region, the eclipse and astronomy. There will be two sessions (morning and afternoon) every At Sea day of the cruise.

We will, likely, be the only group, in the world, to see this eclipse at greatest eclipse – 6 Minutes 38.9 seconds.

Cheju, South Korea - the major port for the South Korean Island of Cheju-Do located off the southern tip of South Korea.

Kagoshima - Kyushu's southernmost, major city and the capital of Kagoshima Prefecture.

Kobe, Japan – the capital of Hyogo-ken - an historic port and distinct city. With the option to take an excursion to Kyoto or Tokyo.

Tianjin (Beijing), China – the cultural and political center of China.

Optional pre- and post-tours in China including Beijing, Shanghi and Xian.

All the features & activities normally included in a cruise:

Stateroom accommodations featuring all the comforts of home

Personalized service

Library and Card Room

A variety of Nightclubs and Broadway Style Shows

July 16 (Thurs) Flying to Beijing
Optional, low cost, group air transportation to and from the cruise will be offered. Details and pricing will be available this fall. Most people will depart home this day and arrive in Beijing the next morning.

July 17 (Fri) Tianjin (Beijing), China
Tianjin is the major port City for Beijing and is about 60 miles east of downtown Beijing. Passengers should plan on arriving in Beijing by 10am. Passengers should plan on being onboard by 2:00 pm. Ship departs 5:00 pm

July 18 (Sat) At Sea
A series of lectures about the region, the eclipse and astronomy will begin today.

July 19 (Sun) Cheju, South Korea
Cheju is the major port for the South Korean Island of Cheju-Do (sometimes referred to as Jeju-do). Cheju's temperate, subtropical, climate, natural scenery, and beaches make it a popular tourist destination. The Island is located off the southern tip of South Korea and is about 100 miles long and 20 miles wide.
Ship arrives 8:00 am - departs 2:00 pm

July 20 (Mon) Kagoshima, Japan
Kagoshima is Kyushu's southernmost, major city and the capital of Kagoshima Prefecture. The city is often compared with its Italian sister city Naples due to a similarly mild climate, palm tree lined streets, relatively hot tempered inhabitants and Sakurajima, Kagoshima's Vesuvius. Ship arrives 8:00 am - departs 2:00 pm

July 21 (Tue) At Sea
The ship continues to sail for our rendezvous, at maximum eclipse, with the longest total eclipse of the Century. Our lecture series continues today. At mid day we will conduct a "dress rehearsal" to help you prepare for tomorrow's grand event. We will sail at the same course speed and time of day so you will know where the eclipse will be with relationship to your setup.

July 22 (Wed) Eclipse Day!
We will, likely, be the only group, in the world, to see this eclipse at greatest eclipse! 6 Minutes 38.9 seconds. For fun we're going to use the forward motion of the ship along the center line of the eclipse to push the length of totality to 6 minutes 39 seconds - a "silly" tenth of a second longer. Why? 'cause it's fun and we can!

In the past 45 days we have noticed that airlines have finally started to lower their fares. As we blogged earlier this month, British Airways is offering great rates to Europe in conjunction with Cosmos, Globus, Insight and Trafalgar tours. American Airlines has just announced a promotion.

Trying to decide where to go for your next vacation? Now is the time to plan and book a new trip with fares to fun and exciting international destinations starting as low as $75* each way, based on round-trip purchase. Purchase your flight by March 10, 2009, and travel by May 16, 2009, to Europe destinations, and by May 17, 2009, to save on all other international travel! All travel must be complete by May 20, 2009.

FARES ARE EACH WAY, BASED ON A ROUND-TRIP ECONOMY CLASS PURCHASE

Sample fares include:

Los Angeles – Los Cabos, Mexico: $75
Miami – Aruba: $135
Dallas/Fort Worth – Monterrey, Mexico: $142
Miami – St. Croix, U.S.V.I.: $156
New York Kennedy – London Heathrow, England: $196
Los Angeles – London Heathrow, England: $203
New York Kennedy – Brussels, Belgium: $210
Dallas/Fort Worth – Paris Charles de Gaulle, France: $277
Miami – Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: $337
Miami – Sao Paulo, Brazil: $337
New York City – Buenos Aires, Argentina: $350
Chicago O’Hare – Shanghai, China: $351
New York Kennedy – Tokyo Narita, Japan: $425
Dallas/Fort Worth – Buenos Aires, Argentina: $497

One of the joys of travel is finding special treasures that evoke vacation memories. But unfamiliar customs, currency and language can dampen the fun. Some pre-travel preparation and shopping strategies will help you return home with wonderful items that remind you of your travels.

Before You Go:

Research: Do your homework and find out what each area is known for and decide what items you'll look for. Find out what similar items sell for. If you are considering pictures or other items to decorate your home with your travel finds, take measurements, then pop your tape measure into your travel bag. Bring a fabric swatch if needed as well. If you plan on having garments custom-made in the Orient for example, pack a favorite item to copy. Also research customs, GST and VAT tax refunds, shipping large items, and other important rules. Thailand and China, for example, are known for antiques, but you'll need appropriate paperwork to bring them home. In Europe when you make a purchase you must fill out the tax refund form supplied by the ship. You pay the full price, but when you leave Europe there is usually an area in all major airports called 'VAT Refund' after you have cleared security. You take the tax forms to be stamped and drop them in a box. In one to two billing cycles you should see the tax refunded back onto your credit card. If you are traveling on an escorted tour, your tour manager can give you tips on the best places to shop. On a cruise, they normally hold presentations and replay them on the ship channel in the cabin, with shopping tips on each port as well.

Shopping Strategies:

Local markets offer a rich travel experience, and a treasure trove of shopping options. Here are some bargaining tips to make that a more rewarding experience:

Get the Lay of the Land - Be Strategic: Stroll around, take in the colors and the smells of the market while checking around prices on similar items. Watch how merchants interact with their customers. In Italian markets you'll encounter a hard sell; merchants in Arab markets often bargain after you've shared a cup of tea.

The Art of the Deal: Start by offering half the quoted price. Your merchant will tout the value of his handicrafts and bring the price back to almost the original. Split the difference. By the 3rd round your price will likely be about 75% of the original. Instead of haggling again, count out your cash until you reach slightly less than his price. You should have a deal. If the merchant is aggressive, step away. Likewise there is no need to be rude to the merchants, as they are only try to make a living.

Consider Shipping Your Items Back Home: The most difficult part is waiting a few weeks for your items to arrive if you are overseas, but with airlines charging for additional baggage weight, shipping can save you money. Just make sure to insure the package if it is breakable.

In the end, the important thing is that you enjoy the experience and keep in mind, more important than the exact cost will be priceless travel memories derived from your new-found treasures.

We'd love to hear about some of your shopping strategies?

Contributed by: S Brage

A wonderful example of Mughal architecture is the Taj Majal. The Taj Majal was inspired by love, shaped to perfection, and immortalizes one man's love for his wife. Although the building is always stunning, the polished white dome takes on a special glow at twilight as the rising moon reflects off the intricately carved marble facade.

Where are you looking forward to traveling next year? Here are some of the predictions, trends and statistics for travel in 2009.

The U.S. Tour Operators Association reported that for the 5th straight year, Italy placed first as the most popular international destination for vacation packages and tours. Modern Bride's annual "World Best Honeymoon" survey showed Italy has even beaten out Hawaii as the #1 honeymoon destination. Recommend Magazine's Readers Choice awards also listed Italy as the #1 destination. Croatia and China were the hottest up-and-coming countries for tours and travel packages. We were surprised not to see Dubai on the list.

Lonely Planet's top 10 destinations: #1 U.S. with emphasis on National parks and Hawaii; #2 Mexico, with an emphasis on Mexico City and the Pacific Coast; #3 Argentina; #4 Japan; #5 India & #6 Canada (tied);#7 Australia #8 China (tied);#9 Spain and #10 France.

Frommers recently released its top destinations for 2009, focusing on international destinations that are affordable and seeking the newest "hot spots". Washington D.C.; Waiheke Island, New Zealand; Saqqara, Egypt; Lassen Volcanic National Park, California; Istanbul, Turkey; Civil Rights Trail, USA; Cartagena, Colombia; Cape Town, South Africa; Berlin, Germany; Belfast, Northern Ireland; Angkor Wat, Cambodia; Waterton National Park, Alberta, Canada

According to TripAdvisor, the top three predicted hot spots for North America travel are Florida, North Carolina and Alaska.

At Atlas Cruises & Tours, we are seeing a number of trends. Italy continues to be very popular. Consumers are booking specialty travel packages including river cruises, cooking and wine vacations, as well as religious travel. Several dates for the 2010 Passion Play are already sold out. We have been doing several blogs about sustainable travel in the past 6 months, as we are finding consumers more concerned in traveling with suppliers that are environmentally conscious, as well as the desire to visit destinations threatened by climate change such as Antarctica, Alaska, Galapagos and Machu Picchu. Cruises to the Caribbean, Alaska and South America are up, and we except a surge in Europe cruises, as air prices should be coming down considerably, and cruise lines are offering aggressive fares. For those staying close to home, National Parks, Canada & Hawaii are up as well.

Where are you planning to travel in 2009? We'd love to hear your top 3 list!

I find it so sad that so many of these amazing sites worldwide are in danger. It goes on to name the Taj Mahal in India; Lord Howe Island in Australia; Pyramids of Giza in Egypt; Gu Gong (Forbidden City) in China and lastly Little Green Street in London. The small excerpt posted on Yahoo did not even scratch the surface, because this was taken from Frommers 500 Places to See Before They Disappear. Each entry in the book explains why it's been included, gives its history, the nature of the threat against it, brief information on how to visit and what visitors can do to protect it. Price of the book averages around $15.99 at most book stores. Dream about the most beautiful, striking and unspoilt places to be visited that are mentioned in this book, and then let us help you plan your vacation.

We are your travel experts. We believe that travel should be a journey, not just a destination!

In order to be a good travel agent, you need education so that you can pass the information on to your clients. The Travel Institute has certifications that take about 6 years to complete, as you are not eligible to participate unless you have been in the business for a certain amount of time. Cruise Lines International has a 3 step certification process up to a ECC (Elite Cruise Counselor) You have to be in the business a minimum of 10 years to participate in the program as well as conducting various ship inspections. There are also various destination & product specialists programs, seminars, conventions & trade shows throughout the year. Our office has speakers from various preferred partners come in at least twice a month, to ensure we are up to date with new products or changes.

So the next time you book your vacation, keep in mind that travel agents are trained professionals with your best interest in mind, and there is no additional cost to you to book through an agent. In fact, agents will always save you time (& time is money!) and also in many cases, get you a better price or added amenities.

There are over 8.8 million applicants for US passports each year. For that reason, there are around 7,000 passport offices in the country. Generally it takes around 3 to 4 weeks to get a passport. But what if you need to travel soon? If you have 2 weeks, you can usually get an appointment at one of the 13 regional passport offices and get the passport sooner.

Need it even faster? Perhaps "immediately" like one of our clients who arrived at the airport only to realize his passport had expired? You can use ItsEasypassport.com who can usually get you a passport the same day, or within 24 hours. They work in conjunction with US Passport offices in New York, Washington D.C., San Francisco, Houston and other major U.S. cities & even have an office at the JFK airport. The fee for same-day service for a new passport or renewal, is currently from $249 plus standard government passport fees.

Jonathan added that a Yangtze river cruise ranks high on the A-list of "must do" cruises.

The third largest river in the world, the Yangtze River winds 3,900 miles through the country from west to east cutting through 10 provinces before disgorging its water into the Yellow Sea. The Upper Reaches are the most attractive part to cruise with wild mountain ranges, unbroken ravines, and charming landscapes. Along this 130 mile stretch, the river passes through the Three Gorges. There's plenty of time to unwind and plenty of opportunities to see the sights and the history of Magical China.

We suggest at least 12 days to enjoy a few nights before and after a Yangtze cruise in cities such as Shanghai, Xian & Beijing, although the cruises are normally only 3 or 4 nights. Prices begin as low as $2,400 per person, not including airfare. There are trips as long as 23 days, but this is to spend more time in Asia, not a longer cruise experience.
Answer:

You would be surprised how many things can be packed and not exceed 50 lbs. There are some wonderful no wrinkle, light weight fabrics for traveling and you don't need a pair of shoes for each outfit. When staying in the same hotel for more than 1 night, you can take advantage of the laundry facilities they have to offer.

Make a list before packing and make sure to mix and match outfits. Always pack tightly. Scarf or jewelry can change the look or a blouse. Packing loosely will waste space and cause clothes to wrinkle from moving around. Use all the space you have available to you, such as putting socks & under garments inside of shoes.

Day 1 with the Deluxe & Luxury Tours is the day you arrive in Europe to start your tour.

With US and Canada tours, day 1 is the day your tour begins.

With other exotic destinations such as South America, Asia and Australia, please check with you agent, as there could be as many as 1 to 2 days for the flight over.

Over the past several years, we have found a consistent trend where customers can find better prices by booking their airfare separately on-line, & just purchase the cruise or land tour from the supplier.

In most cases, booking your own airfare is fine, but I want to remind you to keep a few things in mind.

When you book airfare with the cruise or tour operator, transfers are included to & from the airport. When calculating how much money you are saving, make sure & factor in the additional cost for transfers.

Tours can cancel due to lack of participation. If you book your own air, we suggest booking a tour that is "guaranteed" to operate. Many suppliers have added hundreds of guaranteed departures on their popular tours.

If you experience a problem with your flight being cancelled due to weather or other circumstances, when you book your airfare along with your travel packages, you will have assistance in booking the next available flight to meet up with your trip. If you book your flights online, how difficult will it be to get someone on the phone to assist you in rebooking another flight?

Insurance is another consideration. If you book your own air, normally the cruise or tour operators insurance will not cover the value of your flights. Make sure to speak to an agent about outside insurance coverage so that your entire purchase is protected.

Book early & save. Many suppliers offer air promotions for bookings made well in advance.

On many occasions we do advise our clients to buy airfare separately, but make sure to take the time to discuss your options with an agent to ensure you are receiving the best value.

A client called today to find out when her documents would arrive. They had just arrived from the supplier, approximately 3 weeks prior to tour start date, which is the normal delivery time. They were mailed out the same day.

I told her they would be delivered by UPS to her home address on Monday.

This is 8 days prior to her departure.

She was satisfied with this and we ended the call.

She called back about 10 minutes later and asked where the documents were being mailed to. I told her they were on their way to her address in Chicago. She said, “But I’m in Rhode Island”.

I asked why she did not advise me of this and she said, “We always spend our summers in Rhode Island”

Okay, so now I need a crystal ball with all of the other hats I wear! I was supposed to know this??

I told her I would see what I could do and called the supplier to ask if another set of documents could be generated and mailed out.

This reservation was made with a Luxury Tour supplier and they agreed to send the documents directly to her Rhode Island address.

If this were a supplier other than a Luxury Tour operator, a duplicate set of documents would have a fee to generate and the overnight mail would have to be paid for by the client.

Please think of your travel agent as one of your circle of family and friends. Keep us in mind to notify us of any changes in your life. Give us your airline schedule if you make your own airline reservations; give us all contact numbers and dates when you’ll be at another location. Don’t think you’re bothering us with trivia. Our job is to give you the best customer service we can, but to do this we need your help.
